So now that you have learned the basics of what flat track roller derby is from our “Roller Derby 101” link, let’s get you started to becoming a skater with SDRD!
First and foremost, WFTDA Requires that ALL skaters are to be 18 years of age and older, so unfortunately we cannot accept minors. (However, there is NO maximum age limit). Gear requirements are also set by the WFTDA and are non-negotiable. We do take some hard falls from time to time and these will help keep us happy and healthy to continue doing what we love to do.
- Mouth Guard (Sisu MouthGuard recommended)
- Elbow Pads
- Wrist Guards
- Knee Pads
- Quad skates (inline skates are NOT allowed unless you are a referee)
“Loaner Gear” a.k.a gear you can barrow from us, is available on a first come-first serve basis and must be returned to league at the end of every practice. If you feel the urge to buy your own gear because roller derby is really something you’re going to commit to, you can visit Sin City Skates. Buying gear can get pricey though, so make sure you’re 150% committed to sticking to roller derby before buying. Sin City can help you determine what gear will suit you best for your skate style and budget needs.
To join, all you have to do is start showing up to practices! It really is that easy. No skating experience is needed, we will teach you to skate (and fall) safely.
PLEASE CHECK OUR CALENDAR DURING HOLIDAY SEASON AS SOME PRACTICES WILL BE CANCELLED
- Sundays- 2pm-4pm @ Skate San Diego
- Mondays and Wednesdays- 6pm-8pm @ Pacific Beach Recreation Center (outdoor basketball court)
Once you decide SDRD is the right fit for you, there will be monthly dues. These dues help us rent our practice venues and will also help us rent venues for games. You can find the link to pay dues on our “Current Members” tab at the top of the page. If you might have difficulty paying dues, don’t worry! Being tight on money should NEVER be the reason you can’t join SDRD. Our treasurer or assistant treasurer can help you set up a personalized plan to meet your needs.
SDRD is always recruiting year round because derby leagues can never have too many players. If you have any questions for us, feel free to message us using our “contact SDRD” link and one of our members will be happy to help! You can also come meet us in person at our practices. We know meeting a big group of outgoing women can sometimes be intimidating, so feel free to bring a friend with you! None of us bite and we are all easy to talk to. Don’t feel like you’re interrupting us by showing up either, WE WELCOME IT!
