Starlettes

Sunday August 12th the tough men and women of Bakersfield left the heat to travel to the slightly cooler San Diego to take on the Starlettes and Aftershocks. This Sunday summer time double header did not disappoint!
The night started out with the ladies of the Starlettes taking on the Bakersfield Diamond Divas. Both teams came out ready to fight for the win and put on a great show for the fans. The bout started out with Irie Strider as jammer, immediately showing off her fancy footwork and she juked around the Divas blockers to start putting up points. Later in the bout she offered another crowd pleaser, going for some jammer on jammer action, blocking the Divas jammer before reaching the pack.
The ladies of Bakersfield always bring the big hits and this bout was no different. Diamond Divas blockers were knocking around the Starlettes jammers and blockers. Great defensive walls by the blockers were able to aid the jammers in getting through the big hitters of the Divas The Starlettes amaxing walls were demonstrated the entire bout. IcePax made it hard work for any jammers that made it to the front of the pack, staying on the opposing jammer as her blockers came to assist.
NeuralizeHer skated great as both blocker and jammer against the Divas. This was the last home bout as a Starlette for NeuralizeHer, who is moving to the East Coast and will be sorely missed but this was a great way to end her last bout at home! The Starlettes fought hard and took the win, with a final score of 286-64.

The second bout of the night was the San Diego Aftershocks against Bakersfield’s Slick City Rollerz. The men started out with the traditional big hits of men’s derby. The Aftershocks were able to quickly pull ahead with great walls and quick jammers. Bobby Light put points on the board right away with some big initial jams giving the Aftershocks great momentum. Slick City Rollerz blockers offered many big hip hits, demonstrating their skills as blockers and knocking the Aftershocks jammers all around the track; but the jammers persevered and continued to put up points.

The most popular jam of the night had to be Rowdy Rodbuster. The crowd went wild when he started off that jammer line, most loudly from his Hidden City Derby Girls cheering squad! The Aftershocks demonstrated great teamwork with two blockers holding the jammer, and a third blocker sweeping in for the hit. This was a great play to see implemented throughout the game. Nick X Fury, Skaterbuilt and Rowdy Rodbuster had this one down perfectly as a picture was snapped.

Soul Rider jammed to the very end, racking up points and never looking tired after jamming most of the bout. B Stang dazzled the crowd with his skills as both blocker and jammer; and of course, his backward skating.

Another highlight of the bout was Starlettes skater, Buns of Fury, skating around wiping up the sweat on the track, always entertaining the crowd; and most importantly, keeping the men safe!

All in all it was a great bout and both teams fought hard and played a good game. The crowd enjoyed the skating to the very end and the Aftershocks did not disappoint the San Diego fans and took the win with a final score of 168-88.

From the very moment the men pulled up to the Tucson Memorial Stadium the pressure was on. The Afterschocks have an ongoing rivalry with the Rattleskates and this time it would be on the banked track. However, this was only the men’s second time ever on the banked. Weeks before they had practiced but both teams had never played a banked track game before.

Geared up and ready to go, they skated around the track as John Hall (old time OSDA skater and former LA T-Birds coach) joined Coach Lady Diesel during their warm-up. The excitement from the fans and skaters continued as the refs did their equipment check and a fun video promo was shown on the big screen explaining the rules of the game.

The action started after the first whistle as Afterschocks’ jammer Soulrider made lead, but was passed by Rattleskates’ Danielson who took the lead and put the first 9 points on the board for Phoenix. The game is a bit different then what you might be used to seeing on the flat track; each jam is 60 seconds and skaters don’t serve their penalties till after the jam is over.

The next few jams were tough, but Bobby Light came through and scored some points for San Diego. However, Phoenix came back quickly and racked up a 15 point power jam with skater Sidelicious as he flew around the track. This left the first quarter score 38 -15 Rattleskates.

Even though Phoenix took lead in the first quarter, San Diego’s captain, B Stang, fought back with a giant apex jump and a mid-air call to end the next jam. This was followed by Afterschocks’ Rave N Buster who brought some more points for the team. Phoenix, however, kept the lead with great jams from co- captain Pistol Pete; this gave them a 30 point advantage. Although they were ahead, blockers Mr. Awesome and Johnny Smokescreen were ejected due to their accumulation of penalties.
Halftime score 75 – 45 Rattleskates.

After halftime, Coach Diesel decided to switch up the lines as new jammer Override shot straight through like a knife through butter. The Afterschocks didn’t go out easy, though, as B Stang had multiple grand slams to add 14 points to the board.

However, with more power jams from Sidelicious and Danielson, Phoenix quickly made the score spread even further. On the last jam Evol Ernie and Cappie from Phoenix lined up on the jammer line. Whistles were blown and Ernie with San Diego went straight through and collected the final 10 points for the game.

Final score: Phoenix Rattleskates 152 – San Diego Afterschocks 101
MVP’s for San Diego Afterschocks:
Jammer- Bobby Light #1.21
Pivot- Rave N Buster #904
Blocker- Evol Ernie #13

This past Sunday night, the undefeated San Diego Aftershocks took on NorCal at San Diego Skateworld. This would be the first time these two teams have played each other so there was a lot of anticipation leading up to this day.

The first few jams NorCal was unable to score even though they gained lead jammer status. Some of their jammers went to the box during this time, which gave Aftershocks the opportunity to capitalize on some early scoring opportunities. Aftershocks also played a two jammer rotation of Bobby Light and Soulrider for the first half, which was also a testament to the endurance of San Diego’s men’s team.

The Aftershocks continued their lead throughout the rest of the first half and went into halftime with a demanding lead. Unfortunately, Aftershocks player Austin injured his ankle badly in the first half and was unable to play the rest of the game.

At the beginning of the second half, coach Sarah Lang AKA Lady Diesel made some line- up changes and Nick Fury was added to the jammer rotation while Bobby Light went into blocking mode.

NorCal played much more defensively this second half, which caused a few Aftershocks jammers to be sent to the box on major penalties. This opened up the opportunity NorCal needed to score some points, and they were able to capitalize on a few power jams. However, this would prove to be to late for a comeback as Aftershocks still also managed to score more points once their jammer came out of the box. B Stang’s trademark backward blocking in the pack held the opposing jammers and allowed holes to open up for Aftershocks jammers to glide through.

Game ended with Aftershocks scoring 156 points to NorCal’s 61.

Next up for the San Diego Aftershocks is their first BANKED TRACK debut in Arizona on June 23rd against the Phoenix Rattleskates!!! Can they keep their undefeated season going on an all-new surface and with a whole new ruleset? Stay tuned…..
