San Diego Roller Derby was founded in the summer of 2008 by Skateworld, the last roller rink operating in the city of San Diego. The league formed with a handful of women and 2 dedicated coaches that looked forward to a bright future.
San Diego Roller Derby is exclusively a flat-track skating derby team. We are a dedicated group of skaters who share the love and passion of roller derby. Together we share a mission: to bring this sport into the limelight and to share with all of you!
San Diego Roller Derby adheres to the rules set by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). Founded in 2004, the WFTDA promotes and fosters the sport of women’s flat track derby by facilitating the development of athletic ability, sportsmanship, and goodwill among member leagues. All members of the San Diego Roller Derby must pass a rules test and the basic skills requirements test as indicated by the WFTDA.
In 2009, the Starlettes played their first season on the road. Winning all 4 games and getting some experience under their skirts, they were excited to a 2010 home season. With new uniforms, a full roster and their beautiful Skateworld, 2010 began with a bang! By midyear, San Diego Roller Derby had an influx of skaters and as a result, the Bandettes were formed as a “B team”.
